Dirty martinis are my FAVORITE! I like to make them using jalapeno-stuffed olives for a little kick. I bypass the vermouth entirely and just go straight vodka with a splash of the brine from the olives tipped in. It will take a little tinkering around before you find the ratio of brine to vodka that you like.

Another thing I've been meaning to try is to make these with Absolut Peppar for even more kick but haven't gotten around to it yet. Let me know if you ever wanna get together and have a dirty martini night!

I skip out on the vermouth too... My favorite mod is to use Garlic Stuffed Olives, or Bleu Cheese stuffed olives.. The dirtier the better... =)

I've done them with the bleu cheese stuffed olives too. The first time I had one with the bleu, it made me gag a little, but they've slowly grown on me and now I really like them!

great suggestions! i'll try those right away - tonight, in fact. if you want to stop by and join me you should. :)

otherwise, we'll figure out a night to celebrate the wonders of dirty vodka martinis soon.

Oooh, that sounds good but I don't think I'll be able to make it tonight. I have dinner plans, after which I have to drive all the way to DC to look in on a friend's cats while she's out of town. This whole week is a little nutty, as it precedes 2 weeks on vacation. I'll be back the second week in August, which happens to coincide with my birthday, so let's definitely plan to get together then and have a few!

Well, start with some good vodka and some dry vermouth. Just use Martini & Rossi vermouth. You want to use the best vodka you can afford, but do note that if you were to decide you like real martinis, you can get by much cheaper, since the best dirty martini is made with mid-grade gin (i.e. the Bombay stuff that is not Saphire).

Get yourself a shaker and put a bunch of cracked ice in it. How big are your martini glasses? You want to add to the shaker as much vodka as will fill your martini glass about 2/3 of the way. Then, put in like a drop of vermouth, or less. You might want to just open the bottle of vermouth and kind of hold it next to the shaker.

Shake or stir, whatever. Try to limit the length of time that the alchohol is in the shaker to like 30 seconds or less. Make it cold, then get it into the martini glass with as little meltage as possible.

That's half your martini, the other half is the olives and the olive juice. Don't skimp on the olives. For olive juice, the obvious thing to do is to use the juice from the jar/container of olives, but there are alternatives. I kknow Beefeater makes bottled olive juice that is nice and briney, and you can use as much as you want and not worry about running out of olive juice before you have used all the olives up.
